The Memphis area has long been known to have some of the freshest, cleanest and most consistent water in the nation. Our strong and emerging microbrewery market is a testament to the quality of our water. The Town of Collierville's water comes from deep underground aquifers, which is pumped directly to the one of four water treatment plants by ten wells for processing. All of the wells come from the Memphis Sands, about 350 feet deep. Our goal is to protect our water from contaminants and we are working with the State to determine the vulnerability of our water source to potential contaminants. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has prepared a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Report for the untreated water sources serving water in this system. The Town's water meets all of the EPA's health standards and is tested daily.
Electric Power
The Town of Collierville's electricity is supplied by MLG&W, which sources from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), a federal agency that sells electricity on a nonprofit basis to its distributors. MLG&W is TVA's largest customer, representing 11% of TVA's total load.
Natural gas is the most common means of residential heating in the MLG&W service area.
Reliance on modern technology is ever increasing, especially for data and voice communications. Instantaneous, global connectivity over the latest in fiber-optic networks is available to both residential and business clients in Collierville. Simultaneous data and voice services are provided by multiple communications companies offering state-of-the-art customized and basic solutions.

Tax Exemption on Utilities
Manufacturers
Electricity and natural gas are normally taxed at the rate of 7.0% for both non-manufacturers and manufacturers; water is taxed at the state and local combined rate of 9.25% for non-manufacturers and manufacturers. Manufacturers may be granted either a full exemption or a reduced rate of 1.5% if the energy fuel or water comes in direct contact with the product. An Industrial Machinery Authorization Exemption Certificate must be on file with the state to support the exemption or reduced rate. The certificate must contain the same name and address information as the MLGW account. If information differs, obtain a new tax form from the Tennessee Department of Revenue and send MLGW the corrected version.
For information on tax exemption certificates, contact the State of Tennessee Sales Tax Department at 1-800-342-1003.
