Resident Information about Solicitation
The Town of Collierville is committed to protecting the well-being, safety, and privacy of its residents. This includes safeguarding residents from unwanted intrusions, fraud, unfair sales practices, and criminal activities.
The Town’s solicitation ordinance requires all individuals, businesses, and organizations wishing to solicit for commercial purposes in Collierville to obtain a permit.
Managing Door-to-Door Sales
Options for Residents:
- Display "No Solicitation" Signs. Property owners can place signs reading "No Solicitation" or "No Soliciting" at or near their front entrance to prevent all forms of solicitation.
- Join the "No Knock Registry". Residents can submit their address to the "No Knock Registry" to prevent commercial solicitors from visiting their home. Click here to join the "No Knock Registry."
It's important to understand the difference between "No Solicitation" signs and the "No Knock Registry".
- "No Solicitation" Sign: Prohibits all types of solicitation, including religious, non-profits, and political campaigns.
- "No Knock Registry": Prohibits only commercial solicitation. Groups like religious organizations, politicians, non-profits, or charitable organizations may still approach your home.
- Residents can choose one or both methods based on their preference or homeowner association rules, which may not allow the display of signs.
How the "No Knock Registry" Works
- When residents sign up, their address is added to a database.
- Commercial solicitors must print the registry list at the beginning of each month before conducting door-to-door sales.
- Note: The "No Knock Registry" does not prevent exempt groups from soliciting; these groups include religious organizations, politicians, non-profits, or charitable organizations.
Requirements for "No Solicitation" Signs
- Signs must be visible from the sidewalk.
- Displaying these signs prohibits all types of solicitors, including religious groups, non-profits, and charities.
Ordinance Details for Residents to Know
- All commercial solicitors must obtain a permit, which includes a criminal background check. Permits will be denied for those with a criminal history.
- Approved commercial solicitors will receive an ID badge from the Town that must be displayed during door-to-door activities.
- Commercial solicitors are only allowed to conduct door-to-door sales during daylight hours; between 9:00 a.m. and one-half (1/2) hour before sunset.
- Religious groups, charities, and political campaigns are exempt from permit requirements.
